No technology that’s connected to the internet is unhackable.
- Abhijit Naskar
As a digital design engineer who has created new technology and trained people in hacking techniques, I get dismayed by what some TV shows and movies espouse. Too often, episodes (especially modern crime shows) employ supposed technology that does not exist and is sometimes not even feasible. Yet, because the show depicts it as real, viewers can be caught up in the FUD – Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt.
Although I have used some artistic expression to provide an atmosphere in this story, such as the DarkWeb auction, I have only included genuine technology and techniques used by hackers and IT security specialists. The sole exception is the mysterious cyber weapon, though many may find that believable once they learn how it works.
Consequently, I’ve highlighted technical terms in my story with hyperlinks. Although the context often incorporates a simple explanation that should suffice, a detailed description in everyday language occurs in the ‘glossary of unusual terms’ accessible via the link.
I also weave many real-world events into the story. Such references also include hyperlinks so you can investigate these true stories further if you choose to.
Concerning the story itself, please remember that I wrote each chapter from a specific character’s point of view. It doesn’t mean that’s how it is; it’s merely how that character sees the world. We all wear filters that distort how we see the people and events in our world. So, please, don’t be offended by how my fictional characters see life through their non-PC flaws.
Subsequently, each chapter uses spelling and idioms for the nationality of the character whose POV that chapter is written from – it’s not poor editing. For example, a CIA agent will use the American spelling ‘color.’ In contrast, a British hacker will use the British spelling ‘colour.’ Likewise, an Aussie would ask, ‘Would you like a cuppa?’ – an American would enquire, “You want coffee?’
Please also note that the key characters in this novel have dark backstories, and one of them engages in activities that may trigger readers who have experienced similar abuse/tragedy. If my work of fiction causes you distress, please accept my sincerest apology – that is the last thing I intend. Any chapter that includes potentially distressing content for some readers has a warning at the start of that chapter, so you will have some idea of when to be prepared.
Whatever your story, I hope this book will inspire you to believe that you can rise above any constraints others may try to suffocate you with – may you live a life without limitations.
And I reckon you might learn a few things you can do to keep yourself safer in this connected yet disconnected world.
And, if you want to add extra atmosphere for some chapters, click the link to the music that the character is playing. But be warned: you’ll come across styles spanning many genres and time.
Lastly, I will only reveal the most significant and heartfelt reason for this book after I’ve completed the story. If I told you now, I’d give away one of the most critical twists.
There are also a couple of surprises for those who make it to the end and want more. Of course, you’ll have to get there first as a subscriber. Once you do, follow the breadcrumbs, solve the puzzles, and you will be rewarded with two bonus chapters. Fyi, the second bonus turns the whole book on its head. I’m sure you won’t see it coming – none of my Beta readers did.
And when the last chapter has been released and the final puzzles are solved, there will be one more huge surprise.
However, you’ll have to wait for that.
